Hotel Sahara on Senapati Bapat Road wanted its name to glow from the roof, readable from more than a kilometre down the straight road from Symbiosis. We built new lit letters in outdoor-grade aluminium with acrylic faces and hundreds of LED modules, and fixed them on the hotel’s existing rooftop frame. The S alone is more than 6.5 ft tall.
A sky sign is not a shop sign. It sits on top of a tall building, so it faces strong wind, harsh sun and the monsoon every day, and it has to shine bright enough to be read from far away. Senapati Bapat Road runs almost straight for about a kilometre and a half from Symbiosis towards Chatushringi, with the hotel facing it, so the goal was a name drivers could read long before they reached the building.
The letters are fabricated from outdoor-grade aluminium, which does not rust in the rains and stands up to sun and weather.
The front faces are acrylic, and every letter is packed with LED modules, hundreds of them across the sign, so the glow is bright and even. The S in Sahara alone is more than 6.5 ft tall.
The hotel already had a steel frame on its roof. Our fitters took the old letters down and fixed the new ones onto the same frame. It was so high up that our fitter Manoj Shukla said, “बाज़ से लड़ रहे थे”: they were fighting off the eagles.
Once it was lit, the name could be read from more than a kilometre away by cars coming up the road from Symbiosis. The owner was all smiles.
