Colour-Changing LED Logo Signs: How We Made the L&T Logo Glow in Any Colour

Most LED signs glow in one colour. This one glows in any colour you like, and changes at the press of a button. Here’s how we built the L&T logo with a colour-changing LED strip, an aluminium box and a white acrylic cap.

The 2 ft L&T logo sign with its white acrylic face on, lit in colour-changing RGB LEDs, held up in the Orchid Digitals office

One sign, every colour

A logo that changes colour from a remote

Walk past most lit sign boards in Pune at night and you'll see the same two colours: white, or warm white. That's the light the LEDs inside make, and the coloured faces on top do the rest.

For L&T we wanted to show something else: a logo that can be green today, blue tomorrow and red on Diwali, or run through all of them while you watch. So we built the L&T symbol, about 2 ft across, with a colour-changing RGB LED strip inside. One small remote decides what it does.

Size

About 2 ft across, 2.5 to 3 in deep

Build

Aluminium trim-cap letters with a white acrylic face

Most LED acrylic signs come in one colour. We can also make signs that are multicoloured, and you control the colours yourself.

Same sign, three moods

Green, cyan, red: you choose

These three photos are the same logo, a few seconds apart. Nothing was changed except a button on the remote. (The face cap is off here, so you can see the light coming from the strip.)

White or colour?

Why most LED signs are white, and when colour makes sense

An RGB strip is different. Each LED holds a red, a green and a blue light, and mixing them makes almost any colour. Put it behind a white face and the whole logo turns whatever colour you choose.

Your brand colour, exactly

Set the logo to your blue or your green, instead of the colour of a sheet of acrylic.

Festivals and occasions

Orange for Diwali, red for a launch, green for Independence Day: change it in a second.

Get noticed

A slow fade from colour to colour draws the eye in a lobby, a showroom or a café.

Just because

Some logos simply look better alive. This one does.

How it is built

A dabba and its lid

The easiest way to picture this sign is a steel dabba. The box is deep and holds the food; the lid is shallow and slides over the top. Our letters work the same way. Sign makers call them trim-cap letters.

1

The box

Each part of the logo is a box of bare aluminium: a back plate with sides about 2.5 to 3 inches deep. Aluminium doesn't rust, so we left it unpainted.

2

The light

An RGB LED strip runs inside every channel, fixed to the back plate. Its wireless receiver is built in, so there are no extra wires to the remote.

3

The face

White acrylic (we call it 040 white) that lets the light through evenly, set in a shallow aluminium frame about an inch deep.

4

The cap goes on

The face frame slides over the top of the box, exactly like a dabba lid. The light now comes out of the front only.

The idea in one picture

Look inside

What you see with the cap off

Take the face off and you see how simple it is: aluminium channels with the LED strip running along each one.

A running colour effect on the L&T logo: different parts of the logo light up in different colours at the same moment

The fun part

What the remote can do

The remote talks to the receiver on the strip. You can fix one colour and leave it, or let the sign run one of its preset effects. In this photo different parts of the logo are lit in different colours at the same moment: that's one of the running effects.

Fix one colour

Pick any colour, including your brand colour, and leave it there.

Fade

Glide slowly from one colour to the next.

Flash

Blink between colours, for a launch or an event.

Chase and sequence

Light runs around the logo, part by part.

Questions people ask

Colour-changing LED signs: FAQ

Can it stay one colour all the time?

Yes. Set your colour once and it stays that way until you change it.

Is it much more expensive than a white LED sign?

Usually not: we generally charge the same rate as white LEDs. The strip and the remote cost only a little more.

What is a trim-cap letter?

A letter built as a deep box with a shallow cap on top that holds the face, like a dabba and its lid.

Do I need an app?

No. It comes with a remote.

Can it go outdoors?

This one is made for indoors or a sheltered spot, like a reception or a covered entrance. Ask us for an outdoor version.

Can any logo be made this way?

Most can. Very thin strokes are hard to light evenly, so send us the logo and we will check.

Made in Pune

Your logo, in any colour

We made this one for L&T. In the end L&T chose a different solution from us for that office, so this logo now lights up the sample wall in our own office, changing colour as it runs through its effects. Come and see it, or let us make yours.
