Reverse-printed acrylic SOP posters and a hybrid lit name board for Kay Bee Bio-organics

A set of process-chart posters that look like back-painted glass, and a small lit name board that puts a printed light box and raised, glowing gold letters on one plate. Made together in our Pune studio for Kay Bee Bio-organics’ mycorrhiza production unit.

The brief

Kay Bee Bio-organics wanted their ROC Mycorrhiza Production Unit to look as good as it works: standard operating procedures that staff can read at a glance and that make the walls look smart, and a name board that stands out from the usual flat sign.

What we made

The posters first. Each process chart is printed on our own Mimaki printer on a clear film backed with white ink, then pasted behind a sheet of 3 mm clear acrylic that we laser-cut to 3 x 2 ft. From the front you see a deep, glossy, glass-like surface, and every line of the procedure stays crisp because the print sits safely behind the acrylic. The back of each poster is plain white.

The kay bee logo on every poster stands up from the surface: it is laser-cut from 3 mm white acrylic and fixed with 3M two-sided tape. We added the logos at no extra charge.

Each poster has small holes at the corners. We sent stud caps and standoff mounts with them, so Kay Bee’s team only had to drill the wall and fix them.

The name board puts three ideas on one small plate. The base is 3 mm white acrylic with rounded corners. On the left, a picture panel in its own rounded white rim, taller than the plate and standing a little proud of it, shows the kay bee logo and a seedling: the picture is printed on backlit film on our Mimaki, pasted behind clear acrylic and lit by bright white LEDs.

On the right, ROC Mycorrhiza Production Unit is laser-cut from 8 mm translucent (040) acrylic and set into matching cut-outs in the plate, so each letter stands about 5 mm proud, with 3 mm gold mirror acrylic on top. The gold stops the light at the front, so the warm white LEDs behind the letters glow out of their sides: a soft halo round every letter, and a gold sign by day.

Behind the plate, a black box about 2 inches deep holds the LEDs, with a deeper box behind the picture panel. The back of the plate is painted black, except behind the letters, so no light bleeds through the white, and the slim power supply sits in the space beside the box. The cable ends in an ordinary plug, and steel standoff mounts at the four corners hold the board off the wall. It is made for indoor use.

Both items were made together in about three days after payment, packed in Pune and shipped to Kay Bee’s production unit near Thane, where their own team fitted them.
