From a Blurry Logo File to a Sharp Acrylic Board: Trendani Recording Studio, Tamil Nadu

A record label in Tamil Nadu sent us a logo too blurry to cut. We cleaned it up, printed the gradient, laser-cut two boards and couriered them over 1,000 km. Here’s how.

The Trendani Recording Studio board held up in our studio: a gradient logo and name raised on white acrylic, with chrome studs in the corners

Behind the scenes · Trendani Recording Studio

A logo board for a recording room, over 1,000 km away

Trendani Productions is a record label in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu. They found us online and asked for one thing: their logo on a board for the studio’s recording room.

The board itself is simple, and we make boards like it every week. The file it started from was not. This is how a blurry logo became a crisp 3D board, and how it reached a studio at the other end of the country.

The problem

A logo that looked fine on a phone

The logo file the client sent was low-resolution. On a phone screen you would never notice. Blown up to 30 inches wide, every edge goes soft, and a laser follows exactly what it is given: a soft edge gives a rough, wobbly cut.

So before we could cut anything, the logo needed clean lines.

The client’s logo file, zoomed in CorelDRAW: every edge soft and blurry, too rough to laser-cut

Before

The client’s logo file, zoomed in CorelDRAW: every edge is soft and blurry.

The same logo after we traced it again, zoomed in: crisp edges, with the laser’s cut line around it

After

The logo traced again, at a similar zoom: crisp edges, with the laser’s cut line around it.

The clean-up

We traced it again, and didn’t charge for it

We redrew the logo’s shapes in CorelDRAW, line by line, and applied the blue-to-purple gradient to it again, so that the laser had sharp edges to follow.

To be clear: we don’t offer design as a service. This wasn’t a new logo, just the client’s own logo, cleaned up so that it could be cut. It took real effort and we could have charged for it. We didn’t. Sometimes going out of the way is how you make a client smile.

Ordering a logo board? Send a clear vector file: .AI, .CDR or .PDF. It goes straight to the laser, with nothing to clean up.

Close-up of the logo: the gradient runs right to the laser-cut edge

The trick

Print first, cut after

The logo and the name TRENDANI carry a gradient that runs from sky blue to deep purple. Here’s how we got it onto raised letters, all in-house.

We printed the gradient on vinyl and pasted the whole sheet onto 3 mm white acrylic first. Then we laid the letters out on that sheet and laser-cut them, vinyl and acrylic together.

So the colour runs seamlessly right to the edge of every cut, with crisp white sides below it, and the gradient flows across the word instead of restarting on every letter.

The build

Three layers on a white base

The base is a 5 mm gloss white acrylic sheet, 30 inches wide and 24 inches high, with a stud hole 1.75 inches in from each edge at the corners.

On it sit the logo and TRENDANI in 3 mm white acrylic with the gradient face, and RECORDING STUDIO in black acrylic. Each piece is bonded onto the base, so the letters stand off it and catch the light from the side.

On the wall

Four chrome studs, and the client fixed it himself

The board hangs on four chrome stud caps, one in each corner, about an inch off the wall. A barrel screws to the wall, the board sits on it, and the cap closes it.

We sent the studs with the board. All the client had to do was drill four holes, fit the barrels and put the board in place.

Then he ordered another

One board became two

The client liked the board enough to order a second one, the same as the first. We cut both from the same files, and the whole job took about a week from file to dispatch.

Below: our cutting files for the two boards. The printed logo and name, the two base plates, and the white acrylic letters and logo laid out for the laser.
