2D Light Box or 3D LED Letters? Two Premium Ways to Light Your Logo

A lit logo sign can be a flat, glowing box or a set of raised letters. Both look premium; they are built in very different ways. Here is how each one is made, using a light box we built for Cemindia, and how to choose.

The Cemindia 2D acrylic light box lit up: a flat red printed face with the white Cemindia logo and a white Since 1931 band, its white acrylic side glowing

Two ways to light a logo

Flat and glowing, or raised and glowing?

When people ask us for a lit logo sign, there are two good answers. A 2D light box is one box with a completely flat, printed face that glows from edge to edge. 3D LED letters are separate letters that stand off the wall, each one its own little box of light.

Neither is the cheap option or the fancy option. Both are premium, both catch the eye, day and night. What changes is how they are built, and that decides which one suits your logo.

Depth

About 2.5 in for both

Light

Hundreds of LEDs inside

Both of them are equally premium, equally classy and eye-catching. They differ in construction.

The 2D light box

What a 2D light box is

“2D” is about the face, not the box. The front is perfectly flat: no letter stands up from it. Behind it, the box is about 2.5 inches deep, and that space is what lets the whole face glow evenly.

This one is a 47 x 23 inch logo sign we made for the reception of Cemindia Projects’ site office on the Pune Metro Rail Project. The red background, the white logo, the trademark sign and the Since 1931 band are all one print.

1

The tray

A tray of ACP (aluminium composite panel) with a raised lip about 1 inch high all round. It goes on the wall first.

2

The LEDs

Rows of LED modules fixed across the tray, packed close so the face glows with no dark patches.

3

The print

The logo is printed on backlit vinyl on our wide-format printer and pasted on a 3 mm acrylic face. (It can also be printed straight onto the acrylic on a flatbed printer.)

4

The lid

The acrylic face with a 2.5 inch side skirt of 3 mm white acrylic. It slides over the tray and covers the lip.

5

The fixing

Screws go through the skirt into the lip, from the sides. The cable comes in through the wall, so no wiring shows.

Day and night

Lights on, lights off

A light box has to look good switched off too. With the lights off the Cemindia face is a deep, even red; switched on, it glows bright from edge to edge.

Before we made it

Seeing it on the wall first

Before we cut anything, we showed Cemindia how the light box would look on their reception wall, by day and by night, on a photo of the room. It is the easiest way to judge the size and the glow.

Proposal render

Day and night, on the real wall

The same render tells you whether a light box or raised letters suits the wall better.

Inside the box

How the Cemindia box comes together

The tray and the lid are made separately and meet on the wall. These are the parts you never see once the board is up.

3D LED letters

What 3D LED letters are

With 3D letters, every letter (and the logo) is its own hollow box, usually about 2.5 inches deep: an acrylic face on top, a side of aluminium or acrylic, and LEDs inside. The letters are fixed on an ACP base or straight onto the wall, so they stand out in relief.

Depth you can see

The letters stand off the wall, so the sign has shadow and relief by day.

Only the letters glow

The face and sides of each letter light up; the base around them stays dark.

Colour per letter

Each face is coloured acrylic or vinyl, and sides can be painted or colour-matched.

Size matters

Every letter is cut and lit on its own, so very small text or fine details are hard to make in 3D.

Where the light comes from

One tray of LEDs, or LEDs in every letter

The biggest difference is inside. A light box has one tray of LEDs behind the whole face. 3D letters have LEDs inside each letter.

Rows of 3-LED modules fixed across the tray for an even glow

Side by side

2D light box vs 3D LED letters

Here are the two builds next to each other: what you see from the front, what is inside, and what each one is good at.

The difference in one picture

Same glow, different build

A light box glows as one panel; 3D letters glow letter by letter.

At a glance

How they compare

Face

2D: one flat acrylic face with a printed logo · 3D: a separate acrylic face on every letter

What glows

2D: the whole face and the sides · 3D: only the letters, front and sides

Colours and detail

2D: any colour, gradient, photo or small text, as printed · 3D: acrylic colours or vinyl per letter; letters must be big enough to cut

Depth

About 2.5 in for both

Behind it

2D: one ACP tray with rows of LEDs · 3D: LEDs inside each letter, letters on an ACP base or the wall

Looks like

2D: a clean, glowing panel · 3D: letters standing out in relief

Wiring

Both: through the wall or the base, nothing on show

Which one?

How to choose between them

Both look premium in a reception, a site office or above a shop. These are the questions we ask first.

Is your logo detailed or colourful?

Gradients, photos, thin lines, small text or a tagline band: a 2D light box prints them exactly.

Do you want depth?

If the sign should stand out in relief and cast shadows by day, choose 3D letters.

Should the background glow?

A light box glows as a whole panel. With 3D letters only the letters glow.

Where will it go?

Not sure? Send us your logo and a photo of the wall on WhatsApp; we'll show you both.

Same build, another client

The same build: a parking board for Jehangir Hospital

We built the lit parking-charges board for Jehangir Hospital’s car park in exactly the same way: a printed acrylic box on an ACP tray full of LEDs. This video shows it glowing.

For Cemindia we kept the same build and changed only the print.

What it costs

Prices

Every lit sign is quoted on its own size, design and fixing, after a free proposal with a layout and a render on your wall or shop front.

Questions people ask

2D light boxes: FAQ

Is a 2D light box flat?

The face is flat; the box behind it is about 2.5 inches deep, which is what lets it glow evenly.

Is the print on the outside?

For Cemindia the logo is printed on backlit vinyl and pasted on the acrylic face. It can also be printed straight onto the acrylic.

Do the sides glow?

Yes: the side skirt is white acrylic, so the board glows from the front and the side.

Will I see wires?

No. The cable comes in through the wall behind the tray.

Is 3D better than 2D?

Neither is better. 3D gives depth; 2D gives a perfectly flat, glowing face and prints any detail. Choose by your logo and your wall.

Can you make both?

Made in Pune

Flat or raised, it should glow evenly
