Direction boards for a Jain temple in Osade, beyond Khadakwasla, that shine back in car headlights on dark village roads. Printed on 3M high-intensity prismatic film, mounted on ACP, and made in a single day in our Pune studio.
The roads leading to the temple are dimly lit, and there is no power along them for a lit board. The trustees needed direction boards that people can read at night, and that can take heavy monsoon rain and hard summer sun.
A reflective board needs no electricity. We used 3M high-intensity prismatic (HIP) reflective film: its surface is covered in tiny prisms, the honeycomb you can see in the close-ups, that send the light from a car’s headlights straight back to the driver. So the letters and arrows shine back brightly in the dark.
We printed the green straight onto the white reflective film with UV inks on our own printer. The temple name and the arrows are left as bare film, so they reflect at full strength, and the green is a thin layer of see-through ink over the same film.
There is no laminate on top. Another layer of film over a reflective sheet cuts its reflection, and the UV-printed ink is tough enough outdoors without it.
The printed film was mounted on 3 mm exterior-grade ACP in our lamination room. ACP does not rust or swell in rain or sun, so it suits an exposed roadside.
Each board is 3 ft x 2 ft, with the arrow pointing left or right. The order came in one morning, we printed, mounted and cut the boards that day, and the temple’s driver collected them the same evening. The trustees fixed them on poles they already had, so the photos here are from our office, before the boards left.
