Why night visibility matters
Road direction boards and highway safety signs have to be clear and legible in daylight and in total darkness. It is a safety requirement: a warning for a slippery road or a sharp U-turn can save a life, but only if the driver sees it in time.
A sign printed on ordinary material is easy to read in sunlight, but at midnight, in heavy rain or in fog it all but disappears. Lighting every sign along a long stretch of open road is often impractical or far too expensive. Our 3M™ HIP night reflective prints solve this: they send light back to its source, the motorist in the car, so your directions and warnings stay readable day and night without electrical wiring or a power supply.
How it works
Standard vinyl prints look excellent in daylight but are hard to see in the dark. Reflective vinyl solves this with its surface: it is embedded with tiny glass beads or micro-prisms, each backed by a silver, mirror-like coating.
When the sign is caught in the headlights of an oncoming vehicle, these millions of micro-mirrors send the light straight back towards the driver. Even on a pitch-black road the sign appears to glow, so directions and warnings can be read at once. This is called retro-reflection.
Reflective prints don't make their own light: they shine only while a light is falling on them, and go dim the moment the headlights pass. For signs that must glow on their own during a power cut, such as indoor emergency exits, choose our glow-in-the-dark prints instead.
The 3M™ HIP film
High-Intensity Prismatic (HIP) film has a top layer of thousands of microscopic, octagon-shaped plastic prisms arranged in a precise honeycomb. Each prism has a silver coating on its underside, so the whole film works like one large, flexible mirror. That construction gives the roll its distinctive silver shimmer.
The mirrored surface is top-coated to take printing inks, so we can print your artwork, text and symbols on it with industrial wide-format printers. In effect, you get your sign printed on a mirror and delivered in a convenient roll.
Prisms focus the reflected light into a tight, bright beam aimed back at the driver.
Unlike a glass mirror, the film is shatterproof, flexible enough to roll, and doesn't crack in the heat.
A high-tack adhesive on the back: peel off the liner and apply it to a smooth metal or ACP sheet like a sticker.
We use genuine 3M™ High-Intensity Prismatic sheeting, a grade made for highway and road signs.
Choosing the right film
We print on three kinds of reflective film. The right one depends on how critical the sign is, how fast the traffic moves and how far away it must be read. This page is about the top grade, 3M™ HIP.
The brightest of the three and made for long-range visibility: the choice for highways, expressways and fast roads, where drivers need an early warning to slow down or turn.
Unbranded prismatic reflective prints suit internal roads, driveways and commercial complexes, where speeds are low and signs are read from about 25-50 metres.
Glass-beaded reflective prints reflect at wider angles over a shorter range and reproduce fine detail and photos well: good for posters, stickers and signs read from under about 100 metres.
Prisms are visible to the naked eye, so very fine detail, like strands of hair in a photo, can get lost among them. Prismatic films are best for bold text and large symbols; glass-beaded films for detailed images.
How far away can a 3M™ HIP sign be seen? Under the right conditions, up to about half a kilometre, but only on a large sign. A small 4 ft sign won't be readable from 500 metres: size your text and symbols for the distance at which drivers need to read them.

Both variants use the same genuine 3M™ HIP film and the same print quality. Choose the one that suits where the sign is going.

3 mm ACP boards
Signs on poles and building exteriors face strong wind, knocks and scratches. A plastic sheet such as sunboard can crack under that treatment. That is why we mount 3M™ HIP prints on 3 mm Aluminium Composite Panel (ACP) for outdoor boards.
ACP is strong and dent-resistant yet light, and because it is aluminium it doesn't rust in the rain, so your reflective signboard lasts longer and stays intact in demanding outdoor conditions.

Print quality
We print on industrial wide-format Mimaki printers with genuine Mimaki outdoor inks, UV or eco-solvent depending on the job. Your artwork is reproduced with sharp detail and strong colours, and the inks are made for outdoor use: they resist fading in harsh sun and don't run in heavy rain, which matters for signs that stand out in the open all year.

3M™ HIP prints are priced per square foot: ₹240 + GST for the roll with a sticker back, ₹360 + GST mounted on 3 mm ACP. Measure your sign in feet, round each side up to the next whole foot, and multiply: that is the area you pay for. Several signs are simply added together.
Our minimum order is ₹3,000 + GST, and small signs are welcome as long as the order reaches it. A single 4 x 3 ft sign in roll form comes to ₹2,880 + GST, so add a second sign or choose the ACP variant. Installation
The roll print is pre-gummed with a strong adhesive, so it goes on like a large sticker. Apply it to a clean, smooth, grease-free surface such as a metal sign plate or an ACP sheet. You can apply it dry, or with a light spray of soapy water, which lets you slide the print into position before it grips; both work well.

Wipe the plate clean and dry. For wet application, mist it lightly with soapy water.

Peel back one edge of the liner, line the print up along the top edge and start pasting.

Work from the top down with a squeegee to push out air bubbles (and the water, if you used it), so the film lies completely flat.

Press all edges down firmly by hand so they are well bonded.
ACP boards are fixed by drilling and screwing or bolting them to a pole, frame or wall. We install in Pune on orders of ₹10,000 + GST and above; installation is quoted separately after we review the site.
