Too Small to Light, So We Lit Around Them: Rose Gold Letters on the Amar Renaissance Pylon, Sopan Baug

A housing society in Sopan Baug wanted its entrance pylon to look classy. The name’s script letters were too small to hold LEDs, so we lit a rose gold box around each word and set stainless steel letters on top.

The Amar Renaissance entrance pylon at dusk: a lit rose gold R above the society’s name glowing on lit contour boxes, Sopan Baug, Pune

Case study · Amar Renaissance, Sopan Baug

It started in a shoe store

He also sits on the managing committee of Amar Renaissance, a housing society in Sopan Baug, Pune. When the committee wanted its entrance pylon branded, he recommended us. That's how this job came to us.

The client

Amar Renaissance Co-operative Housing Society, Sopan Baug, Pune

The pylon

4 ft wide x 12 ft tall, built by the society

The letters

Three kinds on one pylon, all in rose gold

Final design to switch-on

About 15 days

Layout page from our proposal: the 48 x 144 in pylon with the R, the name and SOPAN BAUG placed to the inch

The brief

A plain white pylon, and one wish

The society had already built its pylon at the gate: a steel frame wrapped in white ACP, 48 in wide and 144 in tall. What it needed was the society's name on it.

Mr. Akbar and Mr. Adish Kodre, the two committee members who handled it, had no design in mind. They had one wish: whatever we do, it must look premium and classy.

Planning

Four or five layouts, three meetings

Every version had an R monogram on top, the name below and SOPAN BAUG under it. One early version also had HOME | PEACE | SANCTUARY on the lower band; that line didn't make the final design.

An early version of our proposal: day and night, drawn on a photo of their own pylon. The final went rose gold, and the lower line was dropped.

Choosing the finish

Gold, silver or rose gold?

Mr. Akbar and Mr. Adish came to our shop three times. On one visit we laid out samples of the finishes side by side.

They picked rose gold straight away. The society's gate behind the pylon has a wooden finish, and rose gold sits with wood far better than bright gold or silver.

Gold

Bright and warm, the finish in our first proposal.

Silver

Cool and modern, but cold next to a wooden gate.

Rose gold

Soft and warm, made for the wooden finish behind. Chosen on the spot.

Close-up of the R: a 2.5 inch deep rose gold aluminium side and a white acrylic face

Letter one

The R: a rose gold channel letter

The R on top is about 18 in tall, a channel letter: a rose gold aluminium side 2.5 in deep (0.85 mm thick), a 3 mm white acrylic face and an ACP tray at the back.

Warm white LEDs sit inside, so the face glows a soft gold after dark while the rose gold side catches the daylight.

Our drawing

Where every LED goes

The problem

Then the script got too thin

The name is in a flowing script, and on a 4 ft wide pylon its letters come out only about 6 in tall. The strokes are thin, with no room inside them for LEDs.

Make the letters bigger and the name no longer fits. Leave them unlit and the R glows on its own at night while the name disappears.

All three lit parts in our workshop before fitting: the rose gold channel-letter R and the two contour boxes with rose gold steel letters

The fix

Light the outline, not the letters

So we drew a contour around each word, Amar and Renaissance, and built that shape as a lit box: the same rose gold side, a white acrylic face, LEDs inside.

Our drawing

The box, and the letters that go on it

The contour follows each word with an even margin, so the glow looks the same around every letter.

Our production drawing for the name: contour boxes in white acrylic with a rose gold profile, and the 304 stainless steel rose gold letters cut to go on top

Our production drawing: the contour boxes on top, the steel letters below, and a reference showing where they sit.

How it fits together

Three kinds of letters, one hollow pylon

The R and the two boxes are 3D: each one is drilled and screwed onto the pylon's ACP. The steel letters on the boxes, and SOPAN BAUG below, are flat, so they're pasted on with double-sided 3M tape.

The pylon is hollow behind the ACP. The wires go straight through the ACP into that space, and the power supply hides inside the pylon too, so nothing shows from the road.

In our workshop

Lights on before it leaves

All three pieces

The full-size paper stencil, 48 x 63 in, that marked where the R and the name go on the pylon

On site

A paper stencil the size of the sign

On a 12 ft pylon, an inch out of line shows. So we made a full-size paper stencil of the whole 48 x 63 in zone and taped it to the blank white ACP first.

Stencil first

The full-size paper stencil marks exactly where the R and both boxes go.

2

Drill the 3D pieces

The R and the two contour boxes are drilled and screwed onto the ACP.

3

Tape the flat letters

SOPAN BAUG goes on with double-sided 3M tape, lined up under the name.

4

Wires and power inside

Wiring runs through the hollow pylon to a power supply hidden inside it.

Day and night

Rose gold by day, a warm glow after dark

By day the rose gold sides and steel letters do the work. As the light fades, the R and the boxes come on.

Metal on light

This is the effect we were after: a warm white outline with every steel letter sharp inside it. No LED had to fit inside a 6 in script letter.
