A Sign That Looks Like It’s Melting: Ice Cream Shop Boards for Delrico Creamery, Pune

A pink scoop that drips down the shop front, the name in two languages, and LEDs in everything. Six outlets and counting.

Another outlet: Marathi letters with black sides, an ICE CREAM box and the pink melt on a grey ACP base

Case study · Delrico Creamery

One ice cream brand, six shop fronts

Delrico Creamery makes ice cream in Pune, and people can't get enough of it. The outlets keep opening, and we've made the boards and signs for six of them in about four years.

Every board follows the same idea. And no two are exactly alike.

Outlets so far

Six, in about four years

The look

A pink scoop, melting

Languages

English and Marathi

At night

LEDs in every element

The same outlet by day: the pink acrylic melt standing off a light ACP base, with the name in Marathi

The brief

A sign that sells ice cream

An ice cream shop lives on impulse. Someone walking past has to see the sign, smile, and walk in for a scoop.

A brand with many outlets needs one more thing: people should know it's Delrico from across the road, at every outlet, even though every shop front is a different size and shape.

The idea

Three parts, one look

Each board is built from the same three parts, set out on the shop front at different heights:

The melt

The English name and logo on a pink shape that drips like a melting scoop.

The name in Marathi

Delrico again, in Marathi letters standing beside the melt.

The base

An ACP panel that holds everything and frames the shop front.

The glow

LEDs inside every element, so the whole board lights up at night.

Up close

The melt is the star

It's acrylic, with an aluminium profile running round its edge, printed with pink backlit vinyl, and the logo printed in full colour. Look at the drips: each one stands proud of the base, so it catches the light by day and glows at night.

How we build it

Layer by layer

1

The ACP base

The board starts as an aluminium composite panel cut to the shop front.

2

The melt

The melt shape is cut from acrylic, edged with an aluminium profile and faced with pink backlit vinyl and the printed logo.

3

The Marathi letters

Each letter is laser-cut from acrylic and closed with a side profile: black at one outlet, light at another.

4

The lights

LEDs go inside the melt and every letter, about 2.5 inches deep, so the light comes through the faces.

Moving day

Built in one piece, then up it goes

At this outlet the whole board was put together first and laid out on the pavement, melt, letters, ICE CREAM box and all, before our team put it up above the shop.

The board assembled on the pavement before it went up above the shop

The newest outlet: the round logo in the centre between the Marathi and English names

Growing up

Now the logo takes centre stage

On the earlier boards, the round logo sat right next to the English name on the melt.

As more people got to know Delrico, the logo earned a place of its own. At the newest outlet it sits in the centre, between the Marathi and the English names, on one long pink panel.

Inside too

The melt comes indoors

Step inside an outlet and the look carries on. We made the Delrico letters, the round logo, the circles and the pink metal drips by the entrance in our workshop.

The painting and the ribbed wall finish were done by others; our pieces sit on top.

After dark

Then the lights come on

By day, the colours and the different heights do the work. At night, the melt, the logo and every letter glow, and the shop calls people in from down the street.
