The problem with ordinary vinyl
Ask most print shops for a vinyl print and you get "presentation grade" monomeric vinyl. It reproduces images beautifully, but it is made for indoor or sheltered use. Put it outdoors and it soon starts to crack, fade and lift at the edges.
Indian weather is especially hard on prints: 40 to 50°C in the afternoon sun, below 10°C on some nights. Ordinary vinyl loses its shape under that heat and develops creases, and its glue weakens until the print pulls back from the edges and leaves stains. The shabby graphics on many buses and rickshaws are usually the wrong vinyl for the job.
Three grades of vinyl
Vinyl media fall into three families. Pick the one that matches the surface and the weather, not just the price:

Built for curves
Regular vinyl is stiff and made for flat surfaces; on a car's curves it creases and distorts. Cast vinyl has a controlled stretch, what we in Pune call chivat pana. Warmed with a heat gun, it can be pulled round curves and recesses and settles into the shape as it cools, so a good wrap looks almost like the vehicle's own paintwork.

Heat is the main enemy of outdoor prints: inks fade and ordinary film hardens and cracks. Rain, dust and grime speed it up. Every cast vinyl print gets a cast overlaminate that shields the image from dust, water, scratches and UV. Read more about print lamination.

Built to last years outdoors, but durability is not a warranty. For 3M™ and Wyte™ jobs we can give a written warranty, case by case, depending on the job, the surface and the site. Without a written warranty, prints carry no warranty.

A large hotel in Bhutan wanted colourful patterns on its window cornices, a job usually hand-painted. We printed the designs on stretchable, extreme-weather vinyl and moulded them round the curved cornices instead.

The video (2023) names some other films and temperature figures. For this product we use 3M™ IJ180C or Wyte™ cast vinyl, and the temperatures on this page are the ones to go by.
Installation
Cast vinyl with air-release channels is applied dry: the channels let air escape as you press the film down, so there is no need for water. Water-pasting would block the channels and can weaken the bond.

Wash and dry the surface and wipe off any wax, oil or dust, so the adhesive can grip.

Peel back part of the release liner, position the print and tack one edge in place.

Work outwards with a squeegee; the air-release channels let trapped air escape.

Warm the film with a heat gun to stretch it round curves and recesses, then let it cool to set.
